xxA rare Maison Worth summer gown, 1897, labelled and numbered 91416, with blue art-nouveau stamp to the ivory petersham waistband, the bodice and skirt of ecru silk organza spangled with gold sequins, edged with lilac felt and embroidered in white cotton with delicate trailing blooms, the bodice back fastened with flounced shoulders, ivory satin waistband and collar (later added crimson velvet neck-band), the front of the bodice with curved pouch inset with chiffon and lace jabot, tightly ruched and gathered sleeves, integral underskirt of beige taffeta, bust 81cm, 32in, waist 56cm, 22in (2) This gown was designed by Jean-Phillipe Worth who took over as designer for the house upon his father's death in 1895. The blue stamp is found on only the Summer and Winter 1897 collections. It was not used for the demi-collections. Provenance: From the collection of the late Mary Wild A.R.C.A, costume designer, historian and collector. I bought the gown this year, so now it is in Norway. House of Worth dominated the Parissian fashions in the end of the 19th beginning of 20th century. Read my article Houte Couture 1870 - 1920.
