xxM387M Babani 1920s velvet dress.
This very beautiful dress is made of Babani. It is in silk and velvet with oriental embroidery.

Madame Babani's family came from the Middle East and owned embroidery factories in Constantinople. The embroidery design displays the exotic, orientalismen of the period was in her blood.

Madame Babani opened her Paris shop in 1919. She carried decorative items and textiles imported from the Orient as well as designs from Liberty of London and Mariano Fortuny. His influence can be seen in many of her creations, although her palette was brighter than his.

In her original garments, she created, not only the image, but also the reality of the allure of the East combined with Parisian chic. She also had a successful line of perfumes in the 1920s. The Babani brand was marketed as the perfect marriage of French style with the exotic East. One of the main tag lines for Babani perfumes in 1920 was "Parfums inconnus d'Orient et d'Extrême-Orient"
