1860 white cotton woven corsets. Woven corsets are a mid 19th century phenomenon as they allowed manufacturers to weave a corset on a loom and simultaneously add in the boning. This particular corset is styled with an older 1840's and 1850's shape with a buskless front and a full, flared fan shaped bust. The bust and hips have boned, trangular gussets for maximum shaping and is typical of early Victorian corsetry. Later 1860's corsets start to move away from gusseting for figure shaping when manufacturers start cutting corsets in pre- shaped pieces.
The corset is boned with approximately 198 whalebones of varying degrees of lengths, width and thickness. Light Yellow silk flossing still remains on many of the narrow bone casings.
The top of the corset has a white on white embroidered scalloped edge while the bottom of the corset is piped as is common with mid 19th century clothing.
